Perfil Profesional

The student who graduates from Special Education with a minor in Mental Handicap and Multiple Deficits will be a professional with an integral training, able to mobilize and relevantly combine the personal capacities (knowledge and discipline, interpersonal and emotional abilities) and, in turn, the external resources (national curriculum, TIC´s, experiential networks, among others), allowing to competently communicate and perform with leadership within the various contexts linked to assistance of persons who have Special Educational Needs related to intellectual and multiple handicaps. In order to respond to the changes and evolution of special education the following professional working fields are taken into account: in the education field, special schools, day care centers and regular schools which have integration projects and professional training centers; in the health field, any educational activity directed to providing support for people with intellectual and multiple handicaps; in the management field, ONG´s, communal centers for handicap, government departments, healthcare assistance centers or similar; and as an independent professional. In the professional field, he/she will capable of designing and implementing strategies and evaluation processes as well as designing and applying relevant and innovative didactic proposals focused on the student. Also, he/she will carry out a self-analysis of his/her actions on a permanent basis, becoming a reflective professional, managing research and scientific reasoning tools, allowing to adapt his/her activities as a professor, in order to improve his/her professional practices and, in turn, being able to face new situations, contributing in this way in building a society that values and learns from diversity. He/she will show leadership and teamwork skills, as well as interpersonal abilities related to the organization and coordination of actions which encompass involvement from family, support groups and the community in general. In his/her professional performance, he/she will show social commitment, performing within a frame of ethical principles, being full involved in the tasks undertaken, respecting diversity and favoring common well-being and affable human relations. Finally, he/she will be capable of evidencing competencies related to generating integration/inclusive environments, promoting the maximum development in people who have special educational needs related to intellectual and multiple handicaps, within an educational, professional and social context.

Perfil Genérico UM

The graduate from Universidad Mayor will show through his/her professional work the capacity of entrepreneurship which will allow him/her to creatively establish objectives for him/her or for others, make decisions in ambiguous situations and formulating the means leading to the accomplishment of objectives established; with criticism and self- criticism allowing a continual search of genuine solutions to problems, managing his/her own emotions enduring indecision and ambiguity; with basic research skills to design projects; with self- learning capacity which is evidenced through the search for relevant information, analysis and application of autonomous learning strategies and capacity to integrate inter and multi- professional teams.

Certificación de Competencias

Competency Certification System at the end of each block of CurrículumMayor Universidad Mayor, through its curricular model assures student learning, by the evaluation and competency certification of the profiles stated in each block of CurriculumMayor. Depending on the program, by the end of the 2nd or 3rd year, students undergo the first competency evaluation. The performance is evaluated in a real or simulated evaluative situation in which the performance is evidenced based on the key competencies developed at the Bachelor level. The student advances to the Licentiate level and, again, undergoes the competency evaluation, including specific disciplinary or generic competencies; among the latter, the management of communicational skills, of basic research skills, scientific reasoning and quantitative tools, reasoning, critical analysis and self- criticism, skills to access and use the technological tools, especially the information ones, entrepreneurial capacity and project administration, self- learning and personal development, appreciation of the historical- social and cultural reality of Chile and the world, valuing the role he/she plays in his/her development. The student concludes his/her educational stage at the Professional level, it is here, where the competencies engaged in the graduating profile should represent the response to acting competently as CurriculumMayor assures it in its educational offer. The Evaluation and Certification of Competency System has the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of the professional and generic competencies of the students, according to the UM educational model. This process adds value to the education, since apart from the academic certification the student obtains the performance certification of the evaluated competencies.
